| Windows
in homes and offices kill as many as one billion
birds each year according to researches done by Cornell Lab of
Ornithology. Most
common problem that causes many bird injuries and deaths every year is
the
window. |
| What causes a bird to fly into a window? |
|
Birds
see the
reflection of your yard and the sky in the window. Because they think
that they
are flying towards a real object like a tree, the bushes, several
flowers, or
even the open sky. They fly head-on into the window causing head and
neck injuries
including death. |
| Some
birds are territorial and often fight other birds when
they come close to their eggs. Some of these birds do not know the
difference
between a real bird and their own reflection in a window. |
What can I do to prevent birds from hitting my window? |
| Birds
have a keen vision that is up to 12 times better than
that of humans. By placing hawk decals and WindowAlert decals two to
four
inches apart from each other all over your window is a great deterrent
that
keeps them safe and away from your window. |
| Using hawk decals is recommended because they are a predator of songbirds. |
| Using
WindowAlert decals (which contains a component that
reflects ultraviolet sunlight) glows like a stoplight to them. |
| Window
Magnets are predator birds that appear to be flying
thru your window. These magnets will keep songbirds from flying towards
your
window thus preventing any accidental death or injuries. |
| Placing things like bird feeders, bird bath, bird houses, pots, plants and trees within 3 feet of the window will not cause injury or a bird’s death. Three feet is not harmful to birds because they fly at a reduced speed when they are hopping from one feeder to another. |
|
I’m
thinking of building a house soon and I want it to be
bird friendly. What can I do to my home’s design to keep them from
flying into
my windows? |
| Avoid
placing your windows facing each other. They give the
impression of a clear fly-through view. For those of you that already
have a
house built and you do have windows facing each other you can prevent
the birds
from flying through by only having one curtain or blind opened while
the other
is closed or shut. |
| Are placing bird feeders on my window harmful to birds? |
|
Window
feeders are
attached to the window and are not harmful to birds. Birds fly slowly
towards
the feeder to eat their meal and if the bird flies into the window they
seldom
hit it with enough force to be injured. |
